Manet and the Sea

The exhibition you are looking for is no longer available.

Manet and the Sea, on view October 20–January 19, brings together innovative and compelling sea-related works. Édouard Manet's (French, 1832–1883) seascapes are presented in the context of other well-known artists who employed marine subjects as a new field of experimentation, including work by Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and James McNeill Whistler.

The study of Manet's marine subjects affords the opportunity to review the two most celebrated aspects of his legacy: as the inventor of modern history painting and as the father of the Impressionist movement. Come visit!
