José Guadalupe Posada and the Mexican Broadside

José Guadalupe Posada and the Mexican Broadside

In support of an exhibition running from June 24, 2006, through early January 2007, this striking publication focuses attention on a portion of the Art Institute's collection that has rarely been seen in recent years, late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Mexican broadsides. Popular-press publishers and itinerant hawkers sold these colorful, graphically powerful sheets as penny handbills to lower middle-class and working-class audiences.

Of the 300 objects in the museum's collection, more than 275 are by the most celebrated broadside illustrator, José Guadalupe Posada (Mexican, 1851-1913). His images depict a wide range of events and genres, including the familiar Day of the Dead celebrations, which feature the often humorous and/or satirical calaveras, or skeleton figures.

Soft cover; 40 pages with 35 illustrations (31 color).  English and Spanish.  9 1/2" x 8 5/8" x 1/4".
