Over the past three decades, artist Jeff Wall's (Canadian, b. 1946) large color transparencies have won international acclaim. Wall has created a unique, seductive and complex pictorial universe by drawing upon philosophy, literature, nineteenth-century painting, Neo-Realist cinema and the traditions of both Conceptual art and documentary photography. This exhibition catalogue, which accompanies Wall's 2007 traveling American retrospective, includes an illuminating essay by Peter Galassi and a thoughtful interview with the artist by Art Institute curator James Rondeau.
