Contemporary Collecting: The Donna & Howard Stone Collection

Contemporary Collecting: The Donna & Howard Stone Collection

Over the past three decades, Chicagoans Donna and Howard Stone have built a rich, intergenerational collection of contemporary art in all media.  Much of what they have acquired relates to advanced 1960s and 1970s Minimalism and Conceptualism, and the various styles these movements have inspired.  With consideration given to works produced in Chicago and beyond, the Stone Collection has grown into a truly international representation of contemporary art-making practices during the last fifty years.

Published on the occasion of the first-ever public exhibition of objects from their collection, Contemporary Collecting: The Donna & Howard Stone Collection offers a compelling look at the Stone's holdings and celebrates a major promised gift of fifty works to the Art Institute of Chicago.  James Rondeau's in-depth interview with the Stones sheds light on their history as collectors and their commitment to Chicago's art community.  Also included is an illustrated checklist of 231 works, which serves as a detailed record of the entire collection.

James Rondeau is Curator and Frances and Thomas Dittmer Chair of the Department of Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Judith Russi Kirshner is the Dean of the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
